Preserving Raised Beds

Preserving

Since the last update on my raised beds, I have been busy preserving the long L shaped bed. I looked online for preservative and decking oil. I decided on decking oil as I thought this would look more natural than using some of the stains, as I couldn’t find a colour I liked.

I ordered both products from Wood Finishes Direct as they had them for half the price of local DIY shops, and with free delivery on my order it was a big saving. I would defiantly recommend them if you need wood preservatives, stains or oils. I brought 5 litres of Ronseal Decking Oil (Natural) and Barrettine Wood Preservative (Clear) and two brushes and it came to £50 including delivery. If I had got these from the local DIY stores it would have cost me £50 just for 5 litres of decking oil – so that’s more than half price!

So once these arrived (in less than 24 hours) I got on and did two coats of preservative and then decking oil. I really like the resulting colour, I choose the ‘natural’ finish as I liked the colour the wood was to start with and I was not disappointed with the results it just brought out the natural grain.

Both these products were really easy to apply and it didn’t take me as long as I thought it would (not like painting fences) they are the perfect consistency with no drips and I was impressed with the coverage.  The brushes were really easy to clean as well just needed some paint thinner/white spirit. These are both great products that I would defiantly recommend, hopefully my raised beds will  last longer with these finishes.
